Our efforts to increase the diversity of our committee

Cut or sew masks for Mask Force Williamsburg

Mask Force Williamsburg has made and delivered over 1,300 masks for first responders, nursing homes, social workers and other helpers in our community. But there’s a huge need for more masks, especially for disadvantaged people in our community.

Can you help?

  • Can you trace and cut cotton jersey masks?
  • Do you have sewing skills and a sewing machine?

Mask Force Williamsburg was started in April by WJCC Dems board members Christine Payne and MK Sizemore. MK prepares kits with all the materials needed. Laura Tripp coordinates doorstep dropoff of mask kits and pickup of finished masks, and helps prep materials for mask kits. Christine sanitizes finished masks and delivers them to recipients. Mike Hatfield reaches out to recipient groups and coordinates mask requests. Over 50 volunteers have helped sew or cut out masks.

Racism: what can we do?

Last week, Women for Biden held an online training session with Robin DiAngelo, author of White Fragility. It was a powerful call to action for white people to recognize and respond to the existence of systemic racism in our world and in ourselves.

If you missed the training, you owe it to yourself to watch one of Dr. DiAngelo’s online presentations (there are lots more — just search on YouTube), to read the article that sparked her book, or to read the book itself.

DiAngelo’s argument is that all white people act in racist ways. Racism isn’t just ugly actions by overtly racist people.

Our 2020 goals

We face extraordinary challenges in this year of pandemic.

Despite the difficulties we face, we will work to make our community and our committee more equitable, more effective and more unified.

These are our goals:

  • Increase activism
  • Raise funds to support candidates and our committee
  • Support Democratic candidates in 2020
  • Address community needs and concerns
  • Reinforce unity among Democrats and those who share our core beliefs.
